为改善镀锌层耐蚀性能，一般都要对镀锌层进行适当的钝化处理，来提高镀锌层在环境中的热力学稳定性。钝化处理属一种化学钝化膜技术，它是通过化学或电化学等手段，使金属或镀层表面由活泼态转变为钝化态的过程。实验结果表明：在镀层表面采用化学方法生成一层钝化膜，可以大大提高锌镀层的抗蚀性能。按照锌镀层出现红锈（即铁开始遭受腐蚀）的时间来评价，钝化膜的耐蚀性能相当于13μm锌镀层的耐蚀性。

钝化即是对镀锌板进行铬酸盐钝化处理可以形成钝化膜，溶液钝化族中的三价铬难溶于水，化学性质不活泼，起骨架作用，而其中的六价铬易溶于水，能在钝化膜划伤时起到再钝化的作用，具有钝化膜的治愈作用。因此，在一定限度内，钝化膜能防止蒸汽或潮湿空气直接侵蚀镀锌板，起保护作用。
